Citizen science activities in the Campina de Faro

Schools Program “À Descoberta do Aquífero” (Discovering the Aquifer

Summary:

The "Discovering the Aquifer" citizen science program focuses on schools in the Campina de Faro aquifer system, aiming to engage the school community in monitoring groundwater quality and quantity. The program spans two academic years and involves activities like identifying boreholes, designing data collection protocols, training sessions, groundwater monitoring by students, and analyzing data for future sustainability planning in the face of climate change. The main objective is to facilitate collaborative learning between schools and universities regarding aquifer dynamics. The methodology includes two stages: implementation and students' activities, involving meetings with teachers, approval from school committees, and students' participation with guardians' consent. Results include communication materials, surveys to assess knowledge acquisition, training sessions at the University of Algarve, and ongoing groundwater analysis by students in schools. The program has engaged 5 schools, around 300 students, and more than 20 teachers in various activities aimed at enhancing understanding and protection of the aquifer system.
