Sonification of time series - examples
These sonification exercises transcribed the monthly data of rainfall and water levels in piezometers in aquifers in the Algarve, Portugal, for the period 1987-2018.
The range of the values in the time series was divided by the number of chromatic intervals in the scale of C (49 intervals). Then, each note was converted to the codification in the ABC notation (see https://abcnotation.com/videos#start).
The lower tones correspond to lower levels or less precipitation. Pauses correspond to periods (one or more months) of no rain.
Post-processing was necessary to merge equal consecutive notes by first using EasyABC (https://sourceforge.net/projects/easyabc/) to create xml files from ABC notation, and then import them into MuseScore where post-processing was finally made.
To make your own sonification, follow the instructions I gave on the preceding page: see the Excel file for details (in portuguese, though).
